A man was trapped in a submerged car after crashing into a swimming pool, and a Phoenix police officer leaped into the water to make a dramatic rescue.

A Phoenix police officer jumped into a pool to dramatically save a man trapped in a submerged car.

The rescue happened early Oct. 31 after a driver drove through a fence and crashed into an apartment complex swimming pool. Body camera footage of the rescue was released on the department's social media feed Tuesday.

Bystanders who saw the crash called 9-1-1, and when police reached the scene, an officer quickly pulled off his gear. The officer then leaped into the water.

Footage shows the officer on the submerged vehicle's roof while he used a crowbar-like tool to smash the car's sunroof. Once he shattered the sunroof's glass, the officer pulled the man out of the car.

“Thanks to the swift and courageous response of the officer, the man’s life was saved,” the department stated.

According to police, the driver ended up in the pool after he accidentally hit his car accelerator too hard. The man was taken to the hospital as a precaution, KPHX-TV reports.
